David and Goliath Assembly Idea: How to stand up for what you believe in

This is based on my reflections on the issues surrounding the David and Goliath story
I wonder what you would do in these situations:
Your friend walks back into class with some toilet paper sticking out of the top of her skirt (or his trousers…or bottom of his shoe). Do you:
- Join in with everyone else laughing
- Help your friend to remove the piece of paper
- Tell a teacher
During assembly, the headteacher has said that no one is to run on the grass at the moment because the field is too wet. When you go out at home time however, lots of people you know and some from your class are running on the field! Do you
- Join in and run on the field: everyone else is anyway
- Tell them to stop
- Walk away
You see one of the people in your class being bullied and picked on by someone else in the class. They aren’t your best friend, but you also know that it isn’t right. Should you:
- Try to stop the bully
- Stand back and not get involved
- Go and find someone to sort it out?
GET THE KIDS TO STAND UP, SIT DOWN, CALL OUT, WHATEVER IS APPROPRIATE IN YOUR SCHOOL TO INDICATE THEIR CHOICE.
Make the point: We have to make choices as to which rules we obey, and even when there aren’t rules we know that there are sometimes things that are right to do or not do. This story is about someone who stood up for something that he believed in.
TELL THE STORY OF DAVID AND GOLIATH, FOCUSSING ON THE FOLLOWING POINTS:
- David is defending the principle of the God who loves us
- David uses his experience
- David uses his brains
- David isn’t selfish, wanting to be the best, or for any pride
- David does what he feels is right
TELLING THIS STORY, I DON’T LABOUR ON THE DEATH OF GOLIATH.
Reflect on the following point…
Ask, What mattered to David (that God’s honour was defended)
RELATE IT TO US
What matters is being who you are, and standing up for the things you believe are right. Where can we get people to help us learn those things? (teachers, parents, God)
Revisit the scenarios
PRAYER
Dear God, please help us to do the right thing, and know what the right thing to do is. Help us to be brave when we need to be, and to use our brains to make decisions.
