Assembly idea: healing at the pool of Bethesda

John 5.1-15
This idea is based on what we expect.
I used this in an infant school today, so you would have to work up the idea quite a bit more for older children.
First I asked the children what they expected. For example, if I open my hand with my scarf in it [display scarf, held above the floor] then what do you expect will happen?
If there was something on the floor, what would you expect if i didn’t see it? (trip up)
God is often unexpected, and Jesus when he met people would say and do things unexpected.
I then go on to tell the story of the healing at the pool, though I don’t talk about being told not to sin anymore or the mood of the Pharisees.
Pick up on the points that the man didn’t really expect to be healed, and was surprised when he was.
Thinking about this, I would suggest finding a science experiment that has an unexpected result.
